Our Lady of Fatima with Carmelite Scapular

2017 Marian Day

Saturday, May 13, 2017, at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Middletown, New York over 150 Lay Carmelites and guests gathered for a day of prayer and reflection. Every year, in the month of May, the Lay Carmelites celebrate a Marian Day. This year was extra special because it was on the 100th Anniversary of the Apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima.

The last Apparition on October 13, 1917, has special meaning for the Carmelites. On that day, when Mary appeared to the children, she was clothed as Our Lady of Mount Carmel with the Brown Scapular in her hand.  We are blessed to have on display, in the Shrine Chapel, both images of our Blessed Mother.

During our morning prayer, we crowned the image of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. In the afternoon, we honored Our Lady of Fatima by praying a Scriptural Rosary during Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.

Our Lady of Fatima with Carmelite Scapular

The rainy weather might have dampened others’ spirits, but this building was alive with the joy of people being in community at breakfast, lunch and most especially, at Mass when the choir lead us with beautiful Marian Hymns!

Fr. Francis, O.Carm. connected us with Our Holy Father, Pope Francis by reading the message he proclaimed that same day in Portugal and reminded us of the canonization of two of the children, Jacinta and Francisco Marto which was also happening. While the two of them died at a young age, Sister Lúcia lived for many more years and became a Carmelite Nun. Until her death in 2005, she continued to share her memories of those special months in her life.

We also continued a custom of remembering our deceased Lay Carmelites. Because the weather prevented us from having a procession to the Carmelite Cemetery, we called out the names of those who passed since our 2016 Marian Day and lit candles, in the Shrine Chapel, in remembrance of them and all those in the Carmelite Family who have gone before us.

Solemnity of St. Joseph Mass 2017

The Solemnity of St. Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, was celebrated on March 20, 2017 at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, at the 11:30 Mass since March 19th falls on the Third Sunday of Lent.

Over 30 people attended the Mass with Fr. Joseph Phuong Ngo, O.Carm. as Celebrant. In his homily, he told us to follow St. Joseph’s example of doing all that God asks of us even when we do not understand it. If we take Jesus into our hearts and do our best as humans, we will always be pleased with our work and the gift that God has instore for us. Unlike the construction worker in a story Fr. Phuong told us, who did not do his best in the end, his retirement reward was less than it could have been.

All prayer intentions were placed at the Statue of St. Joseph during the Offertory Procession.

Enthronement Celebration of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Statue

In the final Fatima vision on October 13, 1917, one of the ways the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to Lúcia Santos and her cousins Jacinta and Francisco Marto, was clothed as Our Lady of Mount Carmel and holding the Brown Scapular in her hands.

On February 4, 2017 the Carmelite Family enthroned that historical statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel during a solemn Mass in the National Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, in Middletown New York. Over 150 people, Carmelite Friars, Sisters, Lay Carmelites and people of faith, gathered to pray and hear the story of the special link between this popular devotion to Our Lady of Fatima and this statue.
